MINDFULNESS RAINFOREST TREK--$75: For those of you who would like to get out for a two-mile round-trip hike on a gravel trail through the Southeast Alaskan rain forest, enjoy some conversation with your host and other trekkers, and spend some time beach-combing along the ocean. The first mile is mostly downhill after our flat muskeg start and winds us through a rain forest of Western red cedar, Sitka spruce, and hemlock, eventually leading us to a sprawling, undeveloped, rural beach. Here often various waterfowl and eagles can be seen and sometimes seals, sea lions, and whales.

This 2.5-hour tour includes picking you up at the docks, the 1-hour round-trip drive to and from the trail head, and the hike. You can choose a morning or afternoon tour. Morning tours meet at 8:45 AM and afternoon tours meet at 12:15 PM at the Ketchikan city map within the Berth-3 Shelter. The tour will depart no later than 9:00 AM or 12:30 PM. This hike will take place about 30 minutes north of Ketchikan by car. This hike is also the basis for any add-on packages that may be of interest to anyone.

ADD-ONS

  1. CREATIVE WRITING--$60: For those who range from an aspiring or beginning writer to the more practiced writer, this 2-mile round-trip hike is for the person who would like to jump-start their summer writing, or discover new ways of creatively documenting their Southeast Alaska trip, or have an outdoor experience or place in order to write and/or write about. This tour option comes with a hardcover journal that has waterproof pages and an all-weather mechanical pencil that can be taken with you at the tour's end. Teague will provide writing prompts for those interested in nature-writing, creative non-fiction, fiction, and/or poetry. He will also have on hand a Southeast Alaska flora and fauna book for those interested in identifying what they are seeing along the way.

*There are no facilities at the trailhead, along the trail, or at the beach. This is a rural hike. If needed, there are public restrooms in Knudsen Cove, which is about a mile from the trailhead by car. However, if there is a bathroom emergency, Teague has toilet paper and military waste kits--Wag Bags--one can use and cart out. This is a leave-no-trace excursion, including no littering or food left behind. This is also a tobacco-free, drug-free, and alcohol-free excursion.
